Yeah, I asked Legion, my Mewtwo, what he thought about his new Mega Counterpart. I swear, I should have named this Mewtwo Grumpy Cat!

Hey, in my last one of these sorts of things, I told you I'd dig up what I could on Mega Pokémon when I felt like it and what I think of these new "Mega Evolutions." By now, most of you know how I feel about the... other big addition to Pokemon X and Y, the Fairy Type, (I'll give you a hint... Boo, Hiss! See what I think of it more in depth here, thesilverhyena.deviantart.com/… ) But really, what's up with these "Mega" Pokémon? Do they look like something else for lazy, uncreative trainers to use and break the game? Yes. Are they as vile and disgusting as the Fairy Type? Actually... no, in fact, I find it much easier to warm up to these "Mega" Pokémon then I do with the Fairy Type.

First, let me take you back a ways, down Speculation Avenue. I remember, about 8 years ago or so, hanging out in the living room with my brother and our mutual friend, Dr. Cola, around the Nintendo GameCube playing Pokémon Colosseum Doubles matches... you know, back when you had to have cables to connect your different electronic devices together! Anywho, I remember how we would often talk about how cool it would be if one day, Game Freak would make a battling system that would allow you to send out three Pokémon on the field at once... mainly because we all wanted to see the various Legendary Trios all in battle at once, but hey, we were young and nerdy then... (and still are to this day, obviously.) Little did we know, two generations later, just that feature was added into a Pokémon Game! The other thing we often speculated about, was if third stage Pokémon, like Ampharos for example, would ever evolve again and get a fourth stage. Well... kinda? I guess...

Okay, back to the present. So it may have surprised some of you, considering how harsh I have been on the Fairy type, (for justified and educational reasons, mind you!) that I actually don't hate the Mega Evolutions... in fact, some of them I'm warming up to rather quickly. Others... eh, not so much, but I don't actually truly hate any of them... not even Mawile, despite the fact that it's a Fairy type.

Before I get going on this too much, let me talk about some of the things that I'm really looking forward too in X and Y... and it's not the fact that it's the first 3D Pokémon game for a Handheld console. (Yes, I specifically said HANDHELD console. A lot of people seem for forget about Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD for the Nintendo Gamecube, which were 3D Pokémon Adventure Games in their own right. In fact, I loved those games so much because of what they DIDN'T have, but that's for another time.)

Customizable Trainers: About F***ing time! In Pokémon Battle Revolution for the Wii, Pokemon broke new ground by introducing customizable trainers! It wasn't huge or anything, there were six different trainers to choose from, three boys, three girls, various outfits, hats, and accessories that just made you say "This is me!" But I really liked that, mainly because it wasn't attack of the clones! In fact, I was really hoping that since this 4th gen Wii game had this feature, that Black and White would have introduced it too. *sigh* No such luck. We'd have to wait another generation.

Pokémon Amie: You can read up on what's known about Pokémon Amie here, www.serebii.net/xy/pokemonamie… , but this is my opinion on it... I love the premise! Through out the Pokémon Games, there has always been in game text of some righteous heart ( -cough- Champion Lance! -cough-) claiming that Pokemon are not simply tools for battle! But... that's all you do with them really, is use them as tools of battle... I guess you're just nicer then those other people then? At least in the earlier generations it was like this, specifically Gen 1. Gen 2 brought with it the happiness indicators and the Haircuts that make you're pokemon happy, but you never actually SEE them getting happy. R/S/E of Gen 3 stepped it up a little with the Pokeblock treats and the Contests, an alternative to the standard battling, but it was still only text saying "You're Pokémon likes this." ect, ect. Same with Gen 4, at least with the D/P/P series. With Heatgold and Soulsilver, we do at least get a little bit more from the lead Pokemon in you're team following behind. They make happy noises, cuddleup to you, jump back in surprise, ect, and this was one thing I greatly missed in Black and White, having you're Pokémon follow you around. Gen 5 actually took a step backwards, once again turning our Pokémon into battle tools and only being told when they are happy, never actually getting to see it. But, with Pokémon Amie, this is probably the closest you'll ever be able to get to actually playing and bonding with a Pokémon. Me personally, I can't wait to pet my Salamence and feed it some of those pink pofure goodies... hmmm... made with fresh Sylveon meat daily... Good boy, Optimus!

Super Training: I'll admit it... although I don't go to any of those competitions or anything, I'm one of those people that EV trains their Pokémon and breeds for the high IV counts, ect, ect... which is a real pain in the ass, but you get a much superior specimen in the long run. That being said... it's still mind numbing and time consuming. I mean, I practically track these things to the exact number with a note pad and everything! Super Training looks like it's going to make EV training a hell of a lot easier, faster, and would even make it more accessible to casual players or people who are strapped for time. You can read more about it here, www.serebii.net/xy/supertraini…

The "Speed Boost" Torchic Event: I know, it's kind of cheating putting that here, but I've wanted to get my paws on a Speed Boost Blaziken for some time! Check it out here, www.serebii.net/xy/wifievents.…

Back to the Mega Pokémon! First, lets examine the cons of these new critters. As stated above, it does look like something that uncreative and lazy players will use to break the game. But what really gets me is the name... Mega Evolutions. There is no thought or creativity put into that what so ever! What, did the Nerd from Robot Chicken somehow get in on the designing phase of these new Pokémon?! No really, this sounds like something The Nerd from Robot Chicken would come up with!! "So how about this! Instead of just having Pokémon evolve... let's have them MEGA EVOLVE!" And then Game Freak just said, "I like it! Let's do it!" Just like that...
*sigh* First off, why didn't they just keep what the speculated name for the "Mewthree" was in the first place? Awakened. Yes, originally, people thought this new version of Mewtwo was called "Awakened Mewtwo", which actually sounds much cooler and has a deeper meaning. By use of those special hold items, you're Pokémon would instead Awaken to it's truest and fullest potential and be totally ready to kick some ass. But most people probably wouldn't "Get it" so they just went with "Mega", which everyone understands, right? Ughhhhh. (On a side note, these Mega Pokémon are a lot like what Team Plasma's Corless was trying to do in Gen 5, to unleash a Pokémon's fullest inner potential... a pity he couldn't have just waited one more generation like the rest of us, this is practically his wet dream!)

I've heard some people say that Pokémon is ripping off Digimon with these Mega Evolutions... I really don't know, I always thought of Digimon as a Pokémon rip off myself, personally, so I'll let you folks hash it out amongst yourselves on that one. I've never paid attention to Digimon and I never liked Digimon.... so take this up on internet forums and Youtube... preferably without me, because I really don't care.

But there are some good things about these Mega Pokémon. First thing, you have to have a special "Mega" Stone for your Pokémon to hold, and it's not just one size fits all. No, these stones are specific to their species! Which is a good thing, because much like Legendaries, odds are good that if someone sends out a Mega Pokémon, they've worked hard to earn it. Also, you can't have more then one Mega Pokémon on the field at a time, which means no triple battles where someone sends out three Mega Mewtwos at once! Also, since the Mega Stones take up the Pokémon's hold item slot, you cannot equip them with Lum Berries, Focus Sashes, Life Orbs, or any other game changing items. I can't tell you how many times in my experience playing, a single hold item could make or break the match. In getting boosted stats and a cool new form, you forgo your other hold items. Again, I think this is a good thing to hopefully prevent these guys from being game breaking. You can read more about the Mega Pokémon here, www.serebii.net/xy/megaevoluti…

Now then, let me analyze each of these new Mega Evolutions and give you all my opinions on what we've got so far.

MegaMewtwo: Judging by the image above and what I've posted beforehand, you can probably already tell how I feel about this guy. Now, I don't hate MegaMewtwo, I just find him unnecessary and the design seems more like he's... devolved. First things first, with a base stat total of 680, 130 of it in speed and 154 in Special Attack, Mewtwo really didn't need and extra boost to it's already impressive stats! Second...the design, it looks more like Mewtwo has devolved rather then evolved. I like original Mewtwo, he's a total badass, he is the original badass of Pokémon and has held up through time and still is one of the best legendary Pokémon! Why are they altering him? Anyways, he's got like a uni-boob there on his chest, and his tail has been moved... to his head? Does that make MegaMewtwo a butthead? (Come on, you all should have seen that one coming!) The Original Mewtwo was perfectly fine, he was tough, yes, but there were always ways around him! Mewtwo was the original prize at the end of the labyrinth. In Red/Blue/Yellow, you hadto fight your way through the Elite Four, navigate that annoying as hell maze inside the Cerulean Cave, then... you earned your reward. Even with the introduction of Dark and Steel types, Mewtwo still found ways to plow right through them. With high stats, insane move pool, and awesome pecks up top, Mewtwo didn't need a boost in power, he was already strong enough. The Pros of MegaMewtwo are as such, Insomnia, the doom of Darkrais everywhere, and that MegaMewtwo is NOT a Psychic/Fairy type as I feared it would be.

MegaBlaziken: Okay, one of two things should be done here. Either A: make Blaziken unique by having him be the only starter to have a Mega Evolution, or B: Make Mega Evolutions for EVERY starter of EVERY generation. I actually really like the design, and as mentioned above, I LOVE the speed boost ability. A bird with a humanoid body, Blaziken has always reminded me of the Egyptian Deity, Horus, the Hawk God. Honestly, I cannot wait to get my hands on one of these, don't miss out on that Torchic event, people. So far, that's the only way to obtain the Blazikenite, which is Blaziken's Mega Stone. There's a small part of me that says "third stage pokemon don't NEED a fourth stage", but since I've speculated about this premise since I was ten years old, it is pretty cool to actually see it happening.

MegaLucario: With a base stat total of 525, there was still room for improvement on this Pokemon that reminds me of ANOTHER Egyptian God, Anubis. Again, it still looks like Lucario... just much more... nasty... and mean, and ready to take you're head off with it's bare hands! The Adaptability is a nice ability, meaning MegaLucario's Steel and Fighting type attacks are going to pack a nasty punch. Pair that with an increased Physical Attack stat and you'll be a force that may even send Legendaries running for the hills! The downside... sorry bud, but no focus sash or air Balloon for you!

MegaMawile: A lot of you have probably read what I thought of Mawile becoming a steel/fairy type... yes, we all know what I think of the Fairy type. But after looking at MegaMawile more and more, I realize that maybe if more Fairy types looked like this, I wouldn't find them so f***ing offensive! First off, Mawile is the first one on this list that was in desperate need of a boost! Sure, it was introduced at a time when Steel types were still few and far between, but it was mediocre at best, and was really left in the dust when Pokémon like Electibuzz, Magmar, Yanma, and Sneasel got their 4th gen makeovers. Well, I think Mawile may have just owned all of them now! With the special ability Huge Power, paired with increased Physical and Special Defense, and with those twin jaws in the back of it's head, this thing legitimately looks scary. If I saw this thing in real life, I'd probably run screaming the other way... unless I had a gun. I would be afraid to be this thing's trainer, it looks like it would rip you're hand off if you pissed it off. That being said, as much as I hate the Fairy type, this would be one that I'd consider adding to my team, as the Steel element would make an ironic twist to an Anti-Fairy team. ((Not to mention, with if being the Fairy type, and with those two mouths... there is just a treasure trove of filthy nicknames you could give MegaMawile... yes, I just went there!))

MegaAbsol: Again, another 3rd gen Pokémon in need of a power boost. With a base of 465, Absol wasn't all together unusable, in fact, Absol has a respectable base 130 Physical attack, but with it's other poor stats, Absol doesn't often get the chance to unleash that amazing Attack stat. I love Absol's design, kind of a dog looking thing, and it's a Dark type, an added plus. To me, Absol always looked like it had a slightly human face, which I thought was interesting. That being said, MegaAbsol took a cool design and made it even better. Kind of an "I'm the Angel of Friggin' Death, Motherf******!" An increase to an already respectable attack stat and a much needed boost in speed, I can't wait to try out a MegaAbsol.

MegaAmpharos: Ehhh... not much has really... changed here. It's still just an Ampharos... with a fluffy tail... with more red ruby glow lights in it... more distinct fur... and a mane worthy of a Pantene or Selsun Blue chimerical... and now it's a Dragon type? *shrugs* I don't see how exactly it has any relation to a Dragon, but if it can pound Fairy types into the ground, I'm all for it then! It has the special Ability of Mold Breaker, which is nice, as it lets you ignore the special abilities of you're opponent. MegaAmpharos need never fear Volt Absorb or Lightning Rod! Just keep grooming that mane and tail, girl.

MegaKangaskhan: Another Pokémon that needed an upgrade. Kangaskhan was a good, sturdy normal type choice back in it's day alongside Snorlax and Tauros, but as the generations went on and we got other Normal Types like the infamous Miltank, Slaking, Porygon-Z, Togekiss, and Ambipom to name a few, poor Kangaskhan's been kind of left out, even with it's special ability of Scrappy introduced in 4th gen. (Which is a very useful ability, allowing normal and fighting type moves to strike Ghost types!) But now, it looks like it's going to be Baby's Day Out, as when Kangaskhan uses it's Mega Stone, you're one Pokémon now operates as two, through Kangaskhan's new ability, Parental Bond, which could turn this forgotten Normal type into a total Powerhouse hard hitter nightmare! I actually like this idea, because we finally get to see Kangaskhan's baby grow up, and it gives a boost to a Pokemon that needed it!

Well, that's all I've got for now, it may be a while before we get any more news on Mega Pokémon, but this is where I stand on the matter. Are there Pokemon that don't need Mega Evolutions? Yes! Any of the major Dragons, like Salamence and Garchomp certainly don't need it, nor do any of the Eeveelution lineup to name a few. But overall, I'd like to see more examples of Pokémon like Mawile, Absol, and Kangaskhan, Pokémon that have room for improvement but are often left behind. These Mega Evolutions could help these underrated guys get right back in the game! You know the ones I'm talking about, Butterfree, Beedrill, Dunsparce, Delibird, Pinser, Smergle, Raticate, Delcatty, the Pokémon with low stat averages that we might use through the early game, but then we dump as soon as the BBD comes along. A lot of the Pokémon listed there are ones that I like, mainly because of how nostalgic they are to me, but they'd get crushed if I took them up against my friend's base 700 Black Kyurem! (I mean really, my poor Infernape has to deal with that monstrosity every time it comes into play!) So really, while Blaziken and it's "Mega" evolution is cool and all, he and Mewtwo, and even Lucario can stand up well enough on their own two feet. Lets save the power boosts for the Pokémon that really need it and help them get back in the game!

The part of me that likes the Mega Pokémon outweighs the part of be that doubts this new game gimmick. Probably not what you were expecting, huh? Well, that's all for now, just don't let the power go to you're head.
